KWBJJ KIDS
Our kids program started out quite small and has steadily grown, particularly over the past year. When structuring the kids program, we wanted to keep fun in the forefront, especially for our youngest students.
We believe strongly in empowering children with the ability to defend themselves, but we also believe in keeping the environment positive and fun. We encorporate games as part of our kid classes, teaching them through play and not just through drilling.

KIDS FAQ
HOW OLD DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO BE TO TAKE CLASSES AT KWBJJ?
At the moment I am only excepting kids 5 years old on a case by case basis. We do accept kids ages 6 and older up to 12yrs old. Teens are encouraged to join the adult classes as the younger classes may be too young. At the moment we have several teens that train Monday through Friday at 5pm.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT WHEN WE COME TO CLASS?
When you and your child arrive for their first class there are a few things to expect. First, we will register your child in our system (Zenplanner) and have you electronically sign our liability waiver. We will go over our expectations for your child during class with you present. Our requests are much like expectations at their school; listen when you teacher (coach) is talking and follow directions, use kind words about yourself and your teammates, help a new friend/student feel comfortable anytime you can, ask permission if you need a drink or to use the restroom, etc.-- and have fun!
WHAT CLASS(ES) CAN THEY COME TO?
Kids can come to any (and all!) of the scheduled kid classes at KWBJJ. Once they are 13 years old and over, we can assess whether or not they can attend some adult classes as well. This is determined by the child's level of interest and dedication to their training.
HOW MANY CLASSES SHOULD THEY TAKE A WEEK?
Ideally as many as possible! At least two per week is a good start.
DO YOU OFFER PRIVATE LESSONS FOR KIDS?
We do! Privates are a wonderful tool for learning. If you have a shy child and want them to have a couple of private lessons before starting classes or if your child is very interested in learning more technical details or competing, we can set up some private lessons. They are $25 for 45 minutes for kids. Email to schedule or if you have any quesitons!
WHAT IS YOUR KIDS PROGRAM LIKE?
Our kid's program is based around making jiu jitsu fun and we utilize games, particularly with our youngest students, to help them learn technique. Often times they don't even realize that they're learning!
**Our age groupings are merely guidelines and each child is placed in the class that suits their ability to focus and follow instruction. If they are placed with their age group and are struggling- or excelling- we place them in the correct class for their learning and skill level. There have been times that some of the "bigger" kids need more attention and instruction and are moved to provide that to them; sometimes some of the "little" kids are moved up to the "big kid class," again, based on their interest, learning and skill level.
Some kids may advance quickly for their age and some may take a little more time. Our approach is not cookie-cutter; each child (and adult!) is treated as an individual with full understanding that the learning curve is different for everyone- and that's okay! Brazilian jiu jitsu will build their confidence, teach body awareness, discipline, and boundaries and arm them with tools to enforce those boundaries if needed; i.e. stopping a bullying situation. It will improve their focus and coordination, while increasing their mental and physical agility and fitness. Brazilian jiu jitsu is one of the greatest things that a child can be involved in for their mind, body, emotional, and spiritual health.
WHAT IS YOUR BELT SYSTEM FOR KIDS?
White, Gray, Yellow, Orange, and Green (with four stripes on each belt) and each colored belt has a white band and a black band until age 15. After 15, the teen progresses like an adult: Blue, Purple, Brown, and Black- but the individual must be 18 to receive their black belt.

- Ages 5-6yr olds work on fundamentals: balance, coordination, and focus; takedowns, positions, and submissions on a case-by-case basis
- Ages 7-12 work on all fundamentals plus: submissions, escapes, positioning, and takedowns
- Ages 13-15 work on all of the above and some kids are able to train at adult classes, like an adult beginner.
